Welcome to Tuesday Talk With Alex

Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, I have lived with a spinal cord injury since I was nine months old. I acquired my injury as a result of a car accident caused by a drunken driver. My journey through life would not be the same without the loving support of my parents, family and friends.

Throughout my childhood, I was involved in many activities at school and within my community. Despite being in a wheelchair, I felt as if I could do everything that my classmates were doing. I sang in school choruses and completed all the ranks of Boy Scouts to become an Eagle Scout.

As my friends were learning how to drive, I believed and wanted that opportunity to drive. With the help of South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation, I received training to drive a vehicle using a joystick control system. The independence and freedom of mobility has enabled me to achieve my Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Studies Communication from the College of Charleston.

I’m in the process of completing my Master of Arts degree and I am working in a public affairs office for the Space and Naval Warfare Command in Charleston.

The opportunities to further my education and obtain a job would not have been easily achieved without having the determination to succeed. I’m writing this blog to show that possibilities are endless when living with a spinal cord injury.

As part of the South Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Association, I have had the chance to meet newly-injured patients and their families. It’s rewarding to share my story with them. I will be posting on the blog every Tuesday with a topic based on my experiences or something that I’ve learned. Please feel free to ask questions and make comments on the blog posts. I’m sure we can learn from each other. Thank you for checking out my new blog, Tuesday Talk with Alex.

I happened upon this blog because I have old friends in SC where I was raised. The first line captured my attention along with your dazzling smile and handsome face. Now I’ve read a bit of your story and I’m moved to tears. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what your life has been and how you just ‘took it in stride’ like any other person. Reminds me that I’ve been given this gift and it’s up to me to use it well. Without fear. Wow. Thank you.
